Geo Domain Name Generator

Combine a keyword with cities, states or capitals, such as DentistTexas.com or NewYorkDentist.com, and see which names are free.

One keyword, for example Dentist. Letters of any alphabet, digits and hyphens; no spaces.

How the Geo Domain Generator works

Type one keyword, choose a list of places, say whether the keyword goes at the start or the end, and pick an extension. The tool joins the keyword to every place in the list, removes the spaces inside place names and adds the extension. Places stay in the order of the list. US states, US state codes, Australian states and the city lists of the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand run from largest to smallest by population; US cities, Canadian provinces and capital cities are not in population order.

Each name is then checked with DNS lookups from your browser, against Cloudflare and Google. Every row also shows the place, its population and links to search that place for your keyword on Google Maps, Yelp and Yellow Pages. Nothing you type is sent to Handreg.

Worked example

Keyword Dentist, list US States, keyword at the start, extension .com. The tool makes one name per state, 52 in all, and the first three are:

Input Dentist + US States + start + .com

  • DentistCalifornia.com
  • DentistTexas.com
  • DentistFlorida.com

With the keyword at the end, a two-word state such as New York gives NewYorkDentist.com.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Type a keyword with letters, digits or hyphens. The first letter is capitalised and spaces are not allowed.
  2. Choose a list in the first dropdown, the keyword position in the second and an extension in the third.
  3. Press Generate and watch the statuses fill in.
  4. Sort by domain, length, location, population or status, copy a column, or press Export To CSV.
  5. Open the registrar links to confirm a name, and the Maps, Yelp and Yellow Pages links to see local competition.

How to read the results

Domain is the name that was checked, Length counts the keyword and the place name, and Population is the place population from the list, largest first when you sort by it.

Taken means Cloudflare or Google DNS reports that the name already exists. Likely Available means neither found it, or the check could not finish. A name can be registered without being in use, so a Likely Available name can still be taken: confirm it at a registrar before you buy. Checking means the lookup is still running.

Names for places with accents, such as Montréal, are converted to their Punycode form for the DNS check, and the table shows the readable name.

Frequently asked questions

What is a geo domain?

A geo domain is a domain name that contains a place, such as a city, state or country, usually together with a keyword that says what the site is about, like DentistTexas.com. It tells visitors at a glance where you work.

Are city domain names worth it for a local business?

They can be easy to read and signal where you work, which helps for local trust and for printed material. They do not guarantee better rankings, because search results depend mostly on your content, your reputation and your business listings. Check the Maps, Yelp and Yellow Pages links to see who is already there.

Which places does the generator cover?

The lists are US cities (1,001), US states (52, including DC and Puerto Rico), US state codes, UK cities (258), Canada cities (1,737) and provinces (13), Australia cities (317) and states (6), New Zealand cities (93) and capital cities (238). They are fixed lists, not a complete gazetteer.

What do the Google Maps, Yelp and Yellow Pages links do?

Each link opens a search for your keyword in that place on the named site in a new tab, so you can see existing businesses before you register a name. Yelp and Yellow Pages are mainly useful for US places.

Why are there no spaces in the place names?

Domain names cannot contain spaces, so a place such as New York becomes NewYork. Your keyword cannot contain spaces either. Use a hyphen if you need one, for example tree-service.

Why can a name be marked Taken without a lookup?

A .com name of four or fewer plain letters is reported as taken without any lookup, and a name shorter than two characters is reported as taken for every extension. This is a deliberate shortcut, because such short names are in practice already registered.
